Cover Letter Format

This worksheet reviews cover letter format and content. Cover letters normally have five parts: introduction, your reasons for applying for the job, statement of your suitability for the job, reasons why you want to work for the company, and closing statement.

When writing a cover letter, or indeed any formal letter, it is important to follow established conventions regarding the layout of such correspondence.

Task: The different sections of a formal letter are listed below, but they are not in the correct order. Place numbers beside each one to indicate the correct order.

Writer’s address
Main paragraphs
Subject heading
Today’s date
Receiver’s address
Your signature
Closing phrase (Yours …)
Opening phrase (Dear …) 
Receiver’s name and/or job title
