Checklists for Assessing Reasearch Papers and Assignments:

Presentation, quality of writing, and writing structure can be assessed with the following checklists.

Structure and Content  - Does the research paper or assignment have:

  1. Introduction (interpretation of title; structure of the assignment indicated; areas to be included/excluded)
  2. Well-organized main body 
  3. Logical progression of ideas 
  4. Understanding of the topic
  5. Relevance of information
  6. Use of reading material
  7. Use of examples / evidence
  8. Originality
  9. Critical analysis 
  10. Good quantity and quality of background reading
  11. Clear Conclusion 

Other Aspects - The research paper or assignment should also be checked for:

  1. Presentation of references 
  2. Clarity of language style 
  3. Spelling 
  4. Punctuation 
  5. Grammar 
  6. Length 
  7. Overall presentation 

Of course, students should also use these checklists to check their own academic writing before handing in their research papers or assignments.
